Intercon Purging Instructions
Introduction
Provided below are general guidelines for the use of purging
equipment during the pipe welding process. This information
is provided as a courtesy to Intercon customers and is intended as a
supplement Intercon Purging Products. If you are uncertain about any
aspect of the use of this eqipment, please
contact our sales staff for further
clairification. Thank-you.
Assemble purge unit, making sure all connections are
properly fastened and tightened. Some purge units may be
pre-assembled. Attach purge hose.
Push purge unit up into Pipe A, making sure the retrieval
cable and gas inlet is facing you and approximately 2" (50mm) deep
in the pipe.

Fish purge hose and retrieval cable through the next
section of pipe (Pipe B), whether elbow or pipe spool.
Align Pipes A and B.
Pull purge unit toward you into Pipe B approximately 6" (150mm)
so that the baffles are on either side of the weld zone. The units are
about 8" (200mm) long and should be evenly spaced between each pipe.
Proceed to purge, usually 2 to 4 minutes. If using an oxygen
indicator to measure residual ppm oxygen, the value should preferably be below
70 ppm or the value set by quality control. A faster, more efficient purge can be
obtained by pre-sealing the root gap (weld zone) wth non-contaminating aluminum tape when welding manually.

Proceed to weld. If not welding orbital, and non-contaminating aluminum tape has been utilized, proceed by pulling 2" to 3" of tape off ahead of the root pass.
After the weld is completed, maintain purge for an extra
minute during the cool down phase so oxidation does not form in the weld seam.
Pull purge unit through the completed section, stopping just
short of the next section.

If more sections are to be added, repeat steps 3 through 9
as necessary.
